Russia continues it's transition from a communist state to a democratic, free market economy.
Government is a federal multiparty republic with a 2-house legislative body.
Natural resources include petroleum, natural gas, timber, furs, precious and nonferrous metals.
Major industries include: auto, trucks, trains, agricultural equipment, advanced aircraft, aerospace, machine and equipment products, mining industry, medical and scientific instruments, construction equipment.
Standard of living fell greatly following the collapse of the Soviet Union but has begun to recover.
High unemployment.
High alcohol consumption rate.

Hierarchical business structure. Superiors have power over subordinates and wield final decision making authority.
Women do not hold high positions in the Russian Business culture.
- Foreign businesswomen often face adversity from the male-dominated Russian business culture.
Russian business laws are likely to change frequently.
Russian business people can be close-minded to new ideas, especially from western business culture.
Don't compromise--it's a sign of weakness.
Negotiations may include: outbursts of frustration, walkouts and threats.
Business day is usually 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and some Saturday mornings.
Fax machines, computers and photocopiers may not be readily available, it's wise to bring all paperwork.

Close the door behind you, when leaving an office
Supply beverages and snacks during business meetings
Go out and have a drink with your Russian counterparts, it is a good way to break the ice.
Bring small gifts for the children of a home you visit

Don'ts

Prior to 1991--highest judicial body was the Supreme Court, which was elected by the Supreme Soviet.
After 199--the Constitutional Court was established to review the Russian laws.
Judges of the Constitutional Court are independent.
Accused are guaranteed equality and a fair defense.
